Analysis:
Damn, please slap me because this is the first time I’ve actually sat down and listened to these guys.
As some of you might have figured out by now, The Story So Far is often referred to as a “pop punk” band. “Then why are they here,” you might ask. Well, I am of the belief that bands like these are very much tied to other bands that are seen here on a daily basis... lyrically (and sometimes vocally), similar guitar work, and, of course, the fact that many of them happen to tour together regularly. Anyways, enough with the boring talk. On to the good stuff...
The first track, “Things I Can’t Change,” beings the album on a bang. Parker Cannon’s vocals are, dare I say..... perfect. His perfect blend of raw emotion and powerful delivery makes him essentially a “dream vocalist” if I were to design a vocalist for TSSF’s genre. On the heels of “Things I Can’t Change” comes “Stifled”, a song about relationships that didn’t work which also doubles as the shortest track on the album. By the time you’re ready for another verse, the track is over. This is not a bad thing, by any means. Pop punk albums are meant to pack a punch, then quickly move on. It always has been, it always will be.
I love the power chords in “Small Talk”. The lines “Breaking in to me/Tell it how you think it’s going to be/I’ll bite back with broken teeth/So helpless” is pure perfection for shouting along with. Honestly, this sounds very much a song that you could see in Silverstein’s collection of work. And if you don’t know what I think of Silverstein, let’s just say that I have the utmost respect for them. Fuck, “Small Talk” sounds like blink-182 too. Anyways, I love it!! “Playing the Victim” is one of the weaker tracks on the album, but all is forgiven once “Right Here” begins. “Right Here” lyrically captures the angst that young people often feel (“Head on the wall/Tell me why I feel so small/When I don’t even care at all”). Now that this fast paced album is in full swing, “Empty Space” takes things to the next level. Easily the best drumming on the album, “Empty Space” has the makings of a classic. Now at a crescendo, “The Glass” is punk at its finest, especially in the lines “You were the spade I used to dig this hole/Blistered my skin to the bone.” Now about 19 or so minutes into the album, we now have our first three minute song (albeit it’s only 3:02), “All Wrong.” The guitarists Kevin Geyer and William Levy do a great job in layering their instruments on this one.
At this point, saying that the album is “winding down” would be a disservice. As an album which revolves around growing up and all of the life issues that go along with it, “Bad Luck” fits perfectly. I’m feeling that this is going to be a perfect track to listen to when I’m feeling pissed towards others. “Face Value” starts out with a massive guitar riff that wouldn’t feel out of place in front of a breakdown. Otherwise, this song has the makings of being a “grower”, if you will... It may or may not be my favorite in a month or two. “Framework” turns the entire album on itself. Whereas the other tracks are about anger and disappointment in others through the (possibly irrational) mind of a young person, “Framework” is introspective and hopeful. The last lines of the album will set up the next album perfectly, I think (Thought I’d burn the seams if they frayed/Thought I’d prove the point that I made/However long you’ve gone I will wait”). These boys from California have set the bar very high not just for themselves, but for others around them.
Key Tracks: “Small Talk”; “Empty Space”; ‘The Glass”; “Framework”
